You should make a copy for your records and ensure that you receive the cancellation endorsement once your request has been processed. Also, if you fax your letter, ensure that you keep a copy of the transmission until you receive your refund, if not the company might not have received the letter and will not entertain your effective date when you resubmit.

‘Pro-rata’ is a term to describe the calculation of return premium owed to you. Normally if an insured cancels a policy, the refund will be based on a ’short rate’ basis (which basically means less money refunded). It is not guaranteed that the insurer will cancel on a pro-rata basis, but it doesn’t hurt to ask! If you have a noble reason for cancelling, sometimes insurers will honour your request.
